Ronnie Wood

Biography

Ronnie Wood and Dewey GraffRonnie Wood was born in Middlesex, England, into a musical and artistic family. Before beginning his musical career he received formal art training at Ealing College of Art in London. As his musical career with the Jeff Beck Group, the Faces and the Rolling Stones progressed, Ronnie continued his painting and drawing, his subjects ranging from musicians he admired, knew and sometimes played with, to family and close friends, and, of course, the self-portrait.

Throughout the years the artist and the musician have been inseparable. As his musical career progressed, Ronnie continued his passion for painting and drawing, his subjects ranging from band members and musicians he admired, knew and sometimes played with, to family and close friends and, of course, the self-portrait. It is on natural to find him with a pencil as with a guitar, drawing portraits of contemporaries and finding inspiration from his musical influences.

In America in the early 1980’s Ronnie produced his first prints – three woodcuts and a series of monotypes. At that time he was not yet an experienced printmaker so it was with great enthusiasm that he seized upon it. The opportunity in 1987 to send several months working in a professional printmaking studio in England. Since then he has devoted to a considerable amount of time to printmaking and has produced a number of images using various techniques –etching, drypoint, screenprint and digital.

Over the years his work has been widely exhibited. In 1996 he had a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, Sao Paulo, Brazil. He has had numerous one man exhibitions in North and south America, in the far East and throughout Europe.

The Butler Institute Of American Art in Ohio held an exhibition of Ronnie Wood’s Art, September 21 to November 21, 2010. The Butler is known as the oldest museum of American Art in the US, where national treasures ranging from Sargent to Pollock are housed. And now, along with these masters, Ronnie Wood's paintings and drawings capturing his personal landscape, from his horses at home to his mates in the Rolling Stones, shared the very same walls. A moment like this is both momentous and unparalleled in an artist’s life. Over the years Ronnie's art has earned almost countless achievements, making him one of the most collected artists alive. But, no matter how many museum shows and artistic milestones that come after, it is this event that forever marks an arrival into the very exclusive club of artists, who have experienced a career retrospective in a major Art Museum.
